Active Review question types

There are thirteen question types in Pearson Assess and Active Review. How each one works is outlined below.

Multiple choice

  • Select your answer(s) from the options provided.
  • Circular buttons indicate one answer only should be selected; square boxes indicate multiple answers can be selected.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.
  • The Check Answer option may not be available for questions with only two possible answers.

Audio

  • Select Record to start recording.
  • Once recording commences, a speech bubble will appear showing elapsed time and giving you the option to pause your recording.
  • Select Stop when you have finished.
  • Select Playback to listen to your recording.
  • To rerecord, repeat this process.
  • You can rerecord your answer as many times as you like before submitting.
  • The audio response option is not available on some devices. If you are unable to submit your answer in audio format, use the text option provided. You do not need to submit your answer in both formats.
  • This question type will be marked by your teacher.

Short text

  • Enter your answer in the long, rectangular response box.
  • Be careful not to enter a space at the end as this may result in your answer being marked incorrect.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.

Long text

  • Enter your answer in the rectangular box.
  • The box will expand as you type.
  • You can apply bold, italics, underline and bullets to format your text. Use the formatting controls above and to the left of the answer box to do this.
  • The maximum word count for your answer is displayed above and to the right of the answer box.
  • You can edit your answer as many times as you like before submitting it.
  • The spellchecker is a feature of your browser. You may need to change your browser settings to Australian English.
  • This question type will be marked by your teacher.

Cloze text

  • Enter your answer in the rectangular response boxes.
  • Be careful not to enter a space at the end as this may result in your answer being marked incorrect.
  • Before you check your answer, ensure you have filled in all response boxes.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.

Add text to image

  • Enter your answer in the rectangular response boxes.
  • Be careful not to enter a space at the end as this may result in your answer being marked incorrect.
  • Before you check your answer, ensure you have filled in all response boxes.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.

Association

  • Place the answer labels in the dashed, rectangular response boxes.
  • To drag and drop a label, select and hold the label and then drag it to the desired response position. Release when the label is in place. You will not be able to scroll while dragging labels in this way.
  • Alternatively, select the label (click/tap once) and then select the desired response position. The label will then move to the desired position.
  • Swap the position of two labels by selecting each succession.
  • Before you check your answer, ensure all response positions have been filled.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.

Cloze association

  • Place the answer labels in the dashed, rectangular response boxes.
  • To drag and drop a label, select and hold the label and then drag it to the desired response position. Release when the label is in place. You will not be able to scroll while dragging labels in this way.

Image association

Cloze dropdown

  • Possible answers are located within the drop-down box. This is displayed as a rectangular box with an arrow on the right side.
  • To display the list of possible answers, select the arrow. Select your desired answer from this drop-down list.
  • To change your answer, repeat this process.
  • Before you check your answer, ensure you have selected an answer for all drop-down boxes.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.
  • The Check Answer option may not be available for questions with only two possible answers.

Image dropdown

  • Possible answers are located within the drop-down box. This is displayed as a rectangular box with an arrow on the right side.
  • To display the list of possible answers, select the arrow. Select your desired answer from this drop-down list.
  • To change your answer, repeat this process.
  • Before you check your answer, ensure you have selected an answer for all drop-down boxes.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green and marked with a tick; incorrect answers will be highlighted red and marked with a cross.

Image highlight

  • Use your mouse, track pad, stylus or touch screen to draw on the image or in the space provided.
  • To cancel your last action, select Undo.
  • If you undo something by mistake, select Redo.
  • Select Reset to clear your entire drawing and start again. You can edit your response as many times as you like before submitting.
  • This question type will be marked by your teacher.

Text highlight

  • To highlight a word, click or tap once on the word.
  • To highlight multiple adjacent words, select the first word and then move your cursor over all the words that you want to highlight (unless the question specifies that you should highlight individual words separately).
  • If you only highlight part of a word, the tool will automatically highlight the whole word for you.
  • To remove highlighting, select the words again and the highlighting will disappear.
  • When highlighting whole sentences, do not highlight the full stop at the end.
  • Select Check Answer to check if your answer is correct. Correct answers will be highlighted green; incorrect answers will be highlighted red.
