Non Fiction

Our demand for freelance writing of non-fiction varies from issue to issue.
The publisher and editors decide the contents for a particular issue and then commission freelance writers or select articles from unsolicited submissions. If you have an idea or material on hand which you feel could be suitable, forward an outline of your story for consideration.

We do not generally commission articles from writers with whose work we are unfamiliar so unless you can show us examples of published work, you will have to submit your article on spec.

Pearson Australia requires a licence to reprint works published in these magazines. However, authors may be paid a publication fee for any future use of the material as defined by the contributor agreement.

Text should be in Times Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced with wide margins on both sides of the typed copy. Don’t worry about fancy headings or borders!
Articles should include subheadings, and short profiles, case studies, tables, hints, jokes, fact files, etc, where appropriate.

We request that all commissioned or accepted work be forwarded to us via email to

Images, Photos and Illustrations

Every article is accompanied by photographs or illustrations. Please indicate where photos might be available and/or provide references for our illustrators.
We only use high quality prints or high resolution digital images. No commitment to use images will be made until they have been viewed for suitability. Digital images must be high resolution (300 dpi) and preferably should be submitted on a CD-ROM. Low-res images can initially be sent by email for viewing purposes.
Any photographs sent to us should have the appropriate acknowledgments and captions attached. All photographs loaned from personal collections will be returned safely.

Fees Paid

Contributor’s Agreements are sent out when manuscripts are accepted or commissioned. You need to sign the agreement and return with an invoice as soon as possible.

Payment is upon publication (January, April, July, October) and a cheque will be forwarded by our accounts department. Any queries regarding payment should be directed to Accounts Payable.

All fees are quoted in Australian dollars. A 10% withholding tax is deducted from fees paid to overseas authors as is required by Australian law.

Please keep your own record of material accepted for publication.
