Offline, iPad and Android Bookshelf

eBooks can be accessed via the Pearson eBook application. The Bookshelf (home page) of the Pearson eBook app has the same functions and similar appearance regardless of whether you are using the offline PC or Mac*, iPad* or Android version of the app. From the eBook app, you can download, access and delete eBooks. You can also renew expired eBook subscriptions.

eBook access limits

Purchased eBooks can be accessed from a maximum of two devices. This can be any combination of offline PC or Mac, iPad or Android. If you would like to install an eBook on another device, you will need to delete and deactivate the eBook on one of the existing devices and then install it on the new device.

Downloading eBooks

You must have a Pearson Places username and password to download Pearson eBooks.

  1. To activate a Pearson eBook, you need to activate an access code located in the front cover of a Pearson book or inside a card. Refer to the eBook QuickStart guide for further information on code activation.
  2. Check if there are any eBooks available for you to download. To do this, select Check for New eBooks, which is located in the top right corner of the app’s home page (see image below).
  3. Enter your Pearson Places username and password into the ‘Username’ and ‘Password’ fields and select Check.
  4. A list of available eBooks will appear. If you have more than four eBooks available, you can scroll through the entire list using your mouse, finger or stylus.
  5. Select the Checkbox next to the eBooks you wish to download and then select Download. If you have a slow internet connection, you should consider downloading one eBook at a time. If you are connected to cellular internet (3G or 4G/LTE) rather than WIFI, consider your mobile data plan and the size of the eBook before downloading.
  6. When the eBook begins to download, a placeholder eBook icon will appear in your Bookshelf. The green line below the placeholder icon indicates the percentage of the eBook that has been downloaded. Do not close the app while an eBook is downloading. The eBook will continue to download if the screen turns off.
  7. Once the eBook has finished downloading, its cover will appear in the Bookshelf. Select the Cover to access the eBook. When using an iPad or Android tablet, the eBook will open over the Bookshelf. When using the offline app on a PC or Mac, the eBook will open in a new window.

Installing eBooks

Using the Pearson Bookshelf app for PC or Mac, your school may have the option to install the eBooks directly from the school server.

  1. Select Install eBook. It is located in the top strap of the bookshelf.
  2. Navigate to the location of the eBook zips. Your teacher or IT staff member will provide this location to you.

    Select the eBook zip and select Open.
  3. While the eBook is installing the app may pause for a minute or two and appear as if it has become non-responsive. Do not close the application. When the eBook has finished installing, the cover will appear.
  4. Select the cover. Enter your Pearson Places username and password and select OK to authenticate the eBook.

Deleting eBooks

If an eBook has expired or you wish to use an eBook on a different device, you can delete the eBook.

  1. On an iPad or Android tablet, tap and hold the cover of the eBook in the Bookshelf. On a PC or Mac, hover your cursor over the cover of the eBook.
  2. A red cross will appear in the upper right corner of the cover. Select the Red Cross and a warning message will appear (shown below).
  3. If you wish to deactivate the eBook on the current device and download it on another, you will need to be connected to the internet. Select Delete and Deactivate and do not close the app for at least 30 seconds. If you delete an eBook, all of your highlights, pen marks and notes will also be deleted.

Expired eBooks

Generally, eBooks will expire within 15 months of being activated. If you select the cover from the Bookshelf and a pop-up window with the message below appears, your eBook has expired.

  1. Ensure you are connected to the internet, enter your Pearson Places username and password and select OK.
  2. The next pop-up window will inform you whether or not your eBook subscription has been renewed.
