Navigation and Resources - PC and Mac

The online and offline eBook formats, which are PC and Mac compatible, have the same eBook interface. The offline format has the additional Bookshelf home page, which is outlined in the Bookshelf article.

The following article covers navigation of the eBook interface, which will look like the image below. There are three parts to the interface – top toolbar, bottom toolbar and sidebar.

If you select Whiteboardon the left of the bottom toolbar, the top toolbar will move to the bottom for easier access when using an interactive whiteboard.

Zooming and page views

The Zoom buttons in the bottom toolbar can be used to increase or decrease the size of the page. You can also zoom in using the SHIFT+ (plus) keyboard command and zoom out with SHIFT– (minus/hyphen).

There are two different page views – one page on the screen or two pages side-by-side. Select the Single Page view and Two Page view buttons from the bottom toolbar to alternate between these views.

Finding a page

There are three tools you can use to find a page – contents, page number and history buttons. To go backwards or forwards one page, select the Left or Right Arrow buttons from the bottom toolbar or use the LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW buttons on your keyboard.

The contents panel can be accessed using the tab in the sidebar. Select Contents and the sidebar will expand. To close the sidebar, select Contents again or select the Double Arrowhead at the bottom of the sidebar.

The contents panel is arranged like a tree diagram. Generally, the first level shows the chapters, the second level shows units and some eBooks have a third subunit level. Select the name of the chapter/unit/subunit to go to that page or to view the list of contents it contains.

Page number navigation

The page number navigation control can be used to go to a specific page in the eBook. It is located in the bottom toolbar, between the arrows. Delete the text that is already in the page number text field, enter the desired page number and select ENTER or RETURN on your keyboard.

History buttons

The history buttons are located on the left side of the top toolbar. They work in the same way as the history buttons on your web browser. To go back to the previous page, select the History Previous arrow. To go forward, select the History Next arrow.

The Pearson Mathematics eBooks also have a ‘go to page’ icon. The icon is located to the left of an exercise and is used to go straight to the answer page for that exercise. To return to the exercise from the answer page, select History Previous.

Go to page

The search feature allows you to search for any word in an eBook.

  1. Select Search from the sidebar.
  2. The sidebar will expand to reveal a search box. Enter your search term in the box and then select ENTER or RETURN on your keyboard.
  3. A list of search results will display below the search box. Select a result from the list to go to that page.
  4. Your search term will be highlighted in yellow on the page.

Finding Resources

There are two tools you can use to find resources – the resources panel and icons on the page.

Resources panel

Select Resources from the sidebar to open the resources panel. There will be two or three headings within the resources panel. At the top, you will probably see the Student Resources. If you are a student, you will see Resources On This Page at the bottom of the panel. Teachers will also see the Teacher Resources heading.

Select the heading for the type of resource you wish to find. Like the contents, teacher and student resources have a tree diagram structure. Select the headings and subheadings until you find the required resource.

Resources On This Page provides a list of student resources that are applicable to the page you are currently viewing.

Resources will open in your browser. If you are using the offline format, you must be connected to the internet to access resources.

Icons on the page

Certain resources will be linked to via page icons. Only student resources that are applicable to a particular part of the eBook will have an icon on the page. To display the name of the resource, hover your cursor over the icon. Select the Icon to access the resource. If you cannot see any resource icons, they may be hidden. To display the icons, select the Show Links buttonfrom the top toolbar. To hide icons, select the Hide Links button from the top toolbar.
