Navigation and Resources - iPad and Android

The eBook interface on iPad and Android have the same functionality. This article features images of the iPad app. If you’re using an Android device, the interface could look slightly different; however, the instructions will still be the same.

The control toolbars

To access the control toolbars, tap the page. Top and bottom toolbars will appear. To hide the toolbars, tap the page again.

Finding a page

There are four tools you can use to find a page – contents, page number, thumbnails and history buttons. You can also swipe over the pages left and right to go to the previous or next page.

The contents page can be used to find a specific chapter, unit or section of the eBook. To find the contents, tap the page to display the toolbars and then select Contents, which is located on the left side of the top toolbar.

Generally, the first column shows the chapters, the second column shows the units within the selected chapter and, the third column (if there is one) will show sections within the selected unit.

Start by selecting the chapter to which you would like to go. Scroll up and down within the column to find chapters not currently in view. When you have selected a chapter, the second column will change and display the units within that chapter. To go to the first page of the chapter, select the highlighted chapter in the first column again. To go directly to a particular unit within the chapter, select the unit from the list in the second column.

For some eBooks, including Pearson Mathematics and Pearson History, selecting a unit from the second column may cause the first column to disappear and a third column to appear with a list of subunits or other sections of the book . To see the first column again, swipe over the screen to the right. To go to the first page of the unit, select the highlighted unit in the second column again.

Page number navigation

The page number navigation control can be used to go to a specific page in the eBook. Tap the page to display the toolbars. Select the text field in the centre of the bottom toolbar. Enter the desired page number and select Go from your keyboard. You can also use the left and right arrows to navigate through the book from the current page.

The thumbnails can be used to quickly scroll through pages. To access the thumbnails, tap the page to show the toolbars. Select Thumbnails from the right side of the bottom toolbar. Swipe left and right over the screen to navigate through the thumbnails and then select the page to which you want to go.

The icons above the thumbnails will filter the list of thumbnails to display pages that contain particular types of resources (worksheets, videos or interactives), notes or bookmarks. After filtering the list of thumbnails, select All to view all the thumbnails again. To hide the thumbnails pop-up menu, select Thumbnails from the bottom toolbar.

History buttons

The history buttons are located on the left side of the bottom toolbar. They work in the same way as the history buttons on your web browser. To go back to the previous page, select the History Back arrow. To go forward, select the History Forward arrow.

The Pearson Mathematics eBooks also have a ‘go to page’ icon. The icon is located to the left of an exercise and is used to go straight to the answer page for that exercise. To return to the exercise from the answer page, select History Back.

Go to page

The search tool allows you to search for any word in an eBook.

  1. Tap the page to show the toolbars.
  2. Select Search from the top toolbar.
  3. Enter your search term.
  4. Select Search on the keyboard and wait for the results to appear.
  5. If there are many results, you may need to scroll through the list.
  6. Select a search result to go to that page.
  7. The search term will be highlighted on the page.

Please note that if you are using an older or less powerful Android tablet, the eBook may shut down while searching, especially if you are searching within a larger eBook, such as Pearson Mathematics.

Finding resources

There are three tools you can use to find resources – table of resources, icons on the page and thumbnails.

Table of resources

The table of resources contains all the resources associated with a particular eBook, except flash interactives, which cannot be accessed from a tablet device.

To access the table of resources, tap the page to show the toolbars. Select Resources from the top toolbar. Students will have a Student Resources tab and teachers will have both the Student and Teacher Resources tab. Select Student Resources or Teacher Resources.

The table of resources has three columns and works in a similar way to the contents. Select a chapter from the first column, a unit from the second column and then a resource from the third column.

Icons on the page

Certain resources will be linked to via page icons. Only student resources that are applicable to a particular part of the eBook will have an icon on the page. When an icon is on the page, tap the page once to display the name of the resource (as you would to display the toolbars). Select the Icon to access the resource. If you cannot see any resource icons, they may be hidden. To display icons, select Show Icons from the top toolbar. To hide icons, select Hide Icons from the top toolbar.

There are three types of resource icons:

The thumbnails list allows you to find pages containing particular types of resources. To access the thumbnails, tap the page to show the toolbars and then select Thumbnails from the bottom toolbar. Above the thumbnails list, select a resource icon. The thumbnail list will be filtered to show only pages containing that particular icon.

Opening resources

When you select a resource from the table of resources or an icon on the page, the resource will open in Safari on an iPad or in your default web browser on an Android device. If you are using an iPad, you can return to the Pearson eBook app by double tapping the home button and selecting the Pearson eBook app icon at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively, on iPad 2 or higher, you can four finger swipe from right to left to return to the Pearson eBook app.

Worksheets and iPad

Worksheets are in PDF form. On an iPad, they will open in Safari. It is recommended that you download and install the Adobe® Reader® app from the App Store so you can annotate PDFs. To open a PDF in another app, from Safari tap the PDF to show the toolbar. Select Open in… and then choose the app in which you would like to open the PDF.

Worksheets and Android

On an Android device, PDFs will download in your default browser. Once the PDF had downloaded, select the Download Arrow button from the bottom Android toolbar and then select the PDF from the notification list.

To make PDFs automatically open in a PDF app, install Mozilla Firefox® and set it as the default browser. Firefox® will then open the PDF in your default PDF app. It is recommended that you install and set Adobe® Reader® as your default PDF application.

On an iPad, videos will play inside your browser. Video support on Android devices is highly variable though. Tablets with Android 3.0 or higher will be able to play videos; however, many of the videos will not play on most Android tablets with Android 2.3.x or lower.

HTML-based interactive learning objects will open and display in your default web browser. Pearson Science Sparklab resources will not display in your browser (see below).

Pearson Science Sparklab (.spk)

Pearson Science iPad eBooks include Sparklab (.spk) resources, which will download, but will not display in Safari. To open Sparklab resources, you will need the SPARKvue HD app. Once you have downloaded the app, it will appear as one of the Open in… options in Safari.
