Primary eBook iPad (reader)

This article covers the reader part of the Primary eBook iPad app. For information about the bookshelf part of the app, see the Primary eBook iPad (bookshelf) article.

The toolbars

Tap the page to display the toolbars. Tap the page again to hide the toolbars.

The contents

To go to a particular chapter:

  1. Select contents.
  2. Select a chapter from the list. You may need to scroll the list to see all of the contents.

Changing the page

Swipe on the page with your finger to change to the next or previous page.

There are also controls in the bottom toolbar to change the page.

  • Left arrow: go back a page. You can swipe left on the page.
  • Right arrow: go forward a page. You can also swipe right on the page.
  • Page number: select the page number, enter a new page number and select the return key on the keyboard.


The thumbnail view gives a visual indication of what’s on every page.

  1. Select thumbnails.
  2. Swipe left and right to view more thumbnails.
  3. Select the page you would like to go to.


Pinch the page with your fingers to zoom the page. Pinch out to zoom out or pinch in to zoom in.

Single and double page view

Change the orientation of the iPad to change between single and double page view. Holding the iPad in landscape orientation displays two pages. Holding the iPad in portrait orientation displays one page.


  1. Select search.
  2. Enter the term you would like to search for.
  3. Select the Search key.
  4. Select the search result to go to the page.

The search term will appear highlighted on the page.


  1. Long press (also called a ‘tap and hold’) a word until the selection handles appears.
  2. Extend the range of the highlight by dragging the handles.
  3. Select a highlight colour.
  4. Tap anywhere on the page to save the highlight.

To change the range or colour of the highlight or to delete it, long press the highlight to display the controls.

To delete the highlight, select the rubbish bin icon on the highlight control bar.


  1. Select pen to display the pen control bar.
  2. Choose a colour from the palette.
  3. Draw on the page with your finger.
  4. To save the pen marks, select close.

To delete the pen marks on the page you are currently viewing, select rubbish bin icon on the pen control bar.


  1. Select add a note from the bottom toolbar.
  2. Tap the page to add a note to that location.
  3. Enter text into the note.
  4. Tap anywhere to save the note.

To read, edit or delete the note, select the note icon on the page to display the note. Select the rubbish bin icon to delete the note.

To view all of your notes, select notes from the top toolbar. Select the note to go the page with that note. Select the rubbish bin icon to delete the note.

Clear all annotations

Allows you to delete all the annotations (highlights, pen and notes) in the eBook.

  1. Select the cog.
  2. Select clear all annotations.
  3. An alert will ask you to confirm.


Select a quiz icon on the page to open a quiz. They’re located on the pages in the fiction and nonfiction books.

Answer the quiz and select Submit to see if your answer is correct. You will have two attempts to answer the question correctly before the answer is given. The answers are not saved or displayed to the teacher. Select the black cross to close the quiz and return to the eBook.


Magazines have audio recording of a short piece of text.

  1. Select the audio icon and the audio player will appear.
  2. Select play/pause to start and stop the audio.
  3. Drag the scrubber to change the location in the audio.
  4. Select close to stop the audio and close the player.

Other resources

Other resources will appear on the page as the Pearson P icon. These resources, such as PDFs and videos will open in Safari.
